Simple benign cysts of the liver occur in 5% of the general
population, however only 5% of these patients become symptomatic.
Most patients have a single cysts, some patients may have several
simple cysts. It can be due to congenital lymphatic obstruction and
faulty bile duct. The right lobe of the liver is the site of these
lesions most frequently.
Although most cysts are asymptomatic, when symptom occur, the do so
because of the very large size of the cysts, or hemorrhage into it.
Treatment is required only if the cyst is symptomatic or if the
diagnosis is uncertain. Surgical procedure involve removing as much
of the cyst wall as possible. Laparoscopically this can be with
excellent results.
