Hepatitis B is the most common chronic infectious disease in the world. Over 300 million people worldwide are infected with the virus. Hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Anorexia, Weakness, Nausea, Epigastric discomfort, Diarrhea, RUQ Pain, Vomiting, Malaise.

Transmission:

  • Sexual Contact

  • Babies born to mothers who are infected with Hepatitis B virus

  • Health care worker who are exposed to blood and body fluids

  • Injecting Drug users

  • Household contact with infection person.

  • Traveling in the area where Hepatitis B is very common.

Diagnosis:

  • Blood test to detect HBsAg and anti-HBc IgM antibody are usually diagnostic of acute hepatits B.

  • If the virus continues to show for 6 month in the blood

Prevention:

  • Hepatitis B Vaccine.

  • If in case of Pregnant women infected with Hepatitis B, the infant born must be given HBIG (hepatitis B immune glubolin) and the vaccine 12 hours after birth

Treatment:

  • Alpha interferon is recommended for the treatment of Hepatitis B virus.
