Hepatitis E virus (HEV), the major etiologic agent of enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis worldwide. The incubation period following exposure to HEV ranges from 15 to 60 days (mean, 40 days).

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain, Anorexia, Dark Urine, Fever, Hepatomegaly, Jaundice, Vomiting, Malaise.

Transmission:

  • Contaminated water

  • Contaminated Food

Diagnosis:

  • It is diagnosed by blood test.

Prevention:

  • Avoid drinking contaminated water

  • Avoid eating contaminated food

  • Pregnant women must be careful about the Hepatitis E virus as the fatality rate is as high as 32%

Treatment:

  • No Vaccine for Hepatitis E currently available
  • Hepatitis E does not cause any chronic infection in long term follow up.
