Hydatid cysts is very common in Saudi males. Hydatid cysts can be
asymptomatic for several years, jaundice, bloating, hepatomegaly,
indigestion may eventually develop. The complications associated
with hydatid cysts usually result from either the cysts becoming
secondarily infected with bacteria, or it ruptures into the pleural
space, peritoneal cavity or biliary tree. Cholangitis can result
from infestation of the bile ducts.
It can be diagnosed by CT scan.
Surgery is the treatment of choice. Medical therapy include the
antihelmintics such as albendazole and mebendazole (with limited
success). Surgery consists of liver resection.
